Merlion Park
It is located on Fullerton Road, Singapore. Spotting this archetypal symbol of Singapore is easy when you are in the vicinity of the Merlion Park and One Fullerton. Standing 8.6 meters high and
weighing 70 tonnes, the Merlion statue has a lion’s head and a fish’s body, and calls this 2,500
square-meter-park home. The large figure of the Merlion with water pouring out of its mouth and fish scales on its body is symbolic of Temasek, the name Singapore was known for in ancient times. The majestic, fearsome head also recalls the legend of Sang Nila Utama, who first spotted a lion on the island and gave Singapore its name. The statue was relocated 120 meters away from its original position in 2002 to where it stands in Merlion Park today, in front of the Fullerton Hotel and facing Marina Bay.

Dear Mr. Lee,
Re: Computer Graphic Designer
With reference to the advertisement in the SCMP on January 11, 2012, I am writing to apply for the position of Computer Graphic Designer.
I am currently a full-time student studying
a degree course in Information Technology at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and I am due to graduate in June 2012. As you can see from the enclosed CV, I have extensive experience in computer graphic design. Apart from the formal training I have obtained from my three-year course and summer programs, I have had
a number of part-time and summer jobs which have helped me to gain experience in designing computer graphics. Frequent participation in workshops, competitions and extra-curricular activities involving the subject has also allowed me to develop insight into the area.
My professional training at the university requires adaptability and creative use of the resources available to produce graphics for real customers in the business world. Working as a student researcher during the last semester has further expanded my skills in data processing and graphic design, and more importantly, my ability to work independently. I feel, therefore, that I have not only the experience that you are looking for, but
a number of other invaluable skills which would benefit me in this position.
I would like to have the opportunity to discuss this position with you further. I can be contacted at 2777 7777 or 9922 0000 between 8:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Thank you for your consideration and
I await your reply.
Yours sincerely,

Most people visiting America from Europe arrive by ship in New York. Some of the visitors and immigrants never go beyond New York. They never see such places as Chicago, Oklahoma and San Fransisco. So the city of New York has people of many different races. It has a large number of foreigners and one can hear foreign languages being spoken on all sides.

New York, which has a population of 8 million, is not only the largest but also the most important city in the United States. It is the centre of business and financial activity. It is not, however, the capital of the USA. The capital is Washington, in the district of Columbia, and the seat of government is there.
